Competitive Advantages
The Company is focussing on developing a blood test of serum-based biomarkers for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. These biomarkers have been shown to be associated with the onset and progression of the disease. The development of an effective and improved diagnostic method has the potential to minimise the enormous impact that Alzheimer’s disease will have on health, quality of life and healthcare costs in coming years. In addition, such a test would and provide a more accurate diagnosis of the disease and monitoring of drug efficacy allowing improved management of clinical trials by facilitating better and earlier patient recruitment.
Alzhyme’s drug discovery research is unique in that it is focussing on a very early stage of the disease by targeting the soluble form of the beta-amyloid protein, well before the insoluble amyloid plaque deposits are formed within the Alzheimer’s brain. Alzhyme has used its proprietary intellectual property to generate a selection of potentially therapeutic peptides that specifically neutralise the damaging potential of the beta-amyloid peptide, which has been shown to play a critical role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Technology/IP
Alzhyme’s lead drug candidate, ANA-5, represents a new and promising therapeutic class of drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. ANA-5 has now entered the lead optimisation stage of development with the aim to develop a small molecule mimetic suitable for oral formulation and chronic dosing.

Alzhyme has ongoing research collaborations with Edith Cowan University, the Sir James McCusker Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease Research, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO).
